What is a MyoVision sEMG Test?
sEMG stands for Surface Electromyography. It’s a diagnostic tool that measures the amount of electrical activity in the muscles, specifically when the muscles are contracting. sEMG is similar to an EKG, which measures the muscle activity of the heart.

How does it work?

Dr. McDermott, or one of his technicians, will use hand held instruments with small probes and place them against your skin over the spinal muscles of the neck and back. As the test is administered, you will see the results pop up on a screen right in front of you! The test is quick (about one minute), painless and totally non-invasive. Once the scan is complete the computer displays the data in a graphical format that is easy to understand for the patient. It can even be emailed and displayed on your smart phone! How does this relate to your health?

Just like an EKG demonstrates the health of your heart to a cardiologist, the sEMG can provide Dr. McDermott with important information about the health of your spine. The scans can help him determine how the muscles surrounding the spine are working and their imbalances. It will also help determine the course of your care, as well as your response to that care over time.
